MassBio, a consortium of biopharmaceutical research and development companies, has signed a multi-year contract extension with benchmarking and energy services company Veolia, expanding the partnership to provide life science facilities with waste management services to members along with digital energy efficiency management, according to an April 16 release.
Based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the MassBio consortium spans more than 1,700 life science companies, each relying on outside expertise to manage complex environmental needs, according to Veolia North America.
As part of the agreement, Veolia will offer building energy management recommendations and solutions and digital metering services to support energy savings and decarbonization of lab buildings and research facilities. These recommendations and solutions will help members in Boston and Cambridge, which require property owners to reduce the carbon output of their buildings, to meet and exceed requirements, Veolia said.
The benchmarking and environmental services company has served as the primary waste management partner of MassBio for over 20 years, providing disposal of regulated medical waste, hazardous and non-hazardous waste and environmental health and safety staffing, per the MassBio website. The two organizations are now expanding the scope of its contract to accelerate efforts to make the biotech industry more environmentally sustainable, including efforts to increase recycling and the sustainable treatment of medical waste, Veolia said.
The contract extension reflects the long relationship between Veolia and MassBio, which leans on Veolia to collect and dispose of a wide variety of waste streams with an emphasis on safety and regulatory compliance, said Bob Cappadona, president and CEO of environmental solutions and services at Veolia North America, according to the release.
The added focus on sustainability is consistent with Veolia’s global GreenUp strategy that aims to support innovation and growth to create a cleaner environment, the company said.
“As part of our GreenUp strategy, we aim to help our customers meet their business goals and ambitions to make the planet a better place for future generations,” Cappadona said. “We know that the work we are doing at Veolia plays a key role in helping MassBio and their members on their quest to find the next great vaccine or medical cure.... It gives even more meaning to what we do.”
