NEW YORK – December 3, 2024 – Ener.co®, a climate tech company improving HVAC performance through proprietary carbon nanotechnology, today announced its Enercoat® spray-on condenser coil coating was applied to 36 of Verizon’s urban data centers across the northeastern United States, saving Verizon $1,280,000 in energy costs per year. This retrofit solution delivers permanent efficiency without needing to replace equipment or system components. After delivering such impactful results, Ener.co and Verizon are preparing a $30M nationwide data center HVAC performance upgrade project.
“Data centers are proliferating across the U.S. and driving up energy demand; 40% of that energy is used for cooling. More efficient cooling performance is critical to managing data center energy and climate impacts,” said Patrick Rathje, President of Ener.co. “Over four years, we demonstrated to Verizon that our technology could deliver reliable improvements in cooling efficiency for a minimal investment, and we’re proud to have earned an expanded and extended relationship with the world’s largest telecom and data service provider."
In Q4 2023, Ener.co optimized 36 Verizon’s urban data centers with condenser coil efficiency treatments on over 14,000 tons of air-cooled cooling equipment across 300 HVAC systems at facilities in the northeastern U.S.
Project results:
- Annual electric savings are 7,700,000 kWh, a cost savings of $1,280,000 per year
- Reduced annual greenhouse gas emissions by about 1,700 tonnes.
- Established a payback of 30 months through energy savings.
- Set to produce an additional $16,000,000 in savings on the treated facilities over the next 10 years.
David Sattler, National Energy Manager for property management company Cushman & Wakefield, in charge of facility energy savings solutions for Verizon, said, “Ener.co’s professionalism and ability to navigate the complexities of working with Verizon have earned our trust as we prepare for the 2025 national rollout of Ener.co®’s solutions, I’m confident they will continue to be a key partner in achieving the energy reduction goals across Verizon’s portfolio.”
Ener.co’s Enercoat offers an accessible and cost-effective alternative to ripping and replacing inefficient cooling equipment in data centers, hospitals, office buildings, and other commercial and industrial buildings of all sizes. Enercoat is applied to HVAC systems, avoiding disassembly, reassembly, and downtime required for more costly and complex system retrofits.
